Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City in Rupandehi had 195,054 residents at the 2021 census, the second most in Lumbini Province. It sits on the Tinau River at the edge of the Terai, where the Siddhartha Highway from Pokhara meets the East-West Highway.
Butwal is above all a trading city. Its vegetable market, Butwal Sabji Mandi, is described as the second largest in Nepal after Kathmandu’s, and banking, education and health are its main services. Nearly 100 buses leave for Kathmandu every day.
Industry sits in the Butwal Industrial Estate, which has been reported as short of space for new factories, and along the 25 km, six-lane road to Siddharthanagar, a favourite site for large plants. Butwal was the temporary capital of Lumbini Province, and many provincial offices have worked from here while the permanent capital at Deukhuri in Dang is finished.
South of the city, Gautam Buddha International Airport opened for international flights on 16 May 2022, about 20 km away, and Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, is about 40 km south-west. Visitors to both pass through Butwal.
