SEO for Trekking Companies in Nepal

SEO for trekking companies is the work that puts your own trek pages, not an OTA listing, in front of a traveller in Seattle or Leeds who searches “Manaslu Circuit trek permit”. I’m Ujjwal Rupakheti, an SEO expert and developer in Itahari. Audits start from NPR 15,000 and monthly SEO from NPR 30,000.

  • A keyword map for every trek you sell
  • Permit, season, difficulty and cost pages kept current
  • Bookings measured by trek, not just rankings
The goal: your own permit page quoted and ranked first. An illustration, not a client screenshot.

01The search

SEO for Trekking Companies: Win the Trek-Name Search

Travellers rarely search for an agency by name. They search for the trek: “Everest Base Camp trek”, “Annapurna Circuit trek cost”, “Manaslu Circuit trek permit”. On those searches you compete with online travel agencies such as TourRadar and Viator, travel blogs and many agencies with near-identical pages.

An OTA booking still earns you money, minus the commission in your supplier agreement, but the traveller booked on someone else’s site. Trekking SEO wins the searches for your strongest treks on your own site, so more bookings arrive direct and OTAs become one channel among several.

Since April 2023 most foreign trekkers in 14 regions have needed a guide arranged through a registered company, so the demand for agencies is real. The method is the same as my wider work as an SEO expert in Nepal, with travel pages on top.

02Keyword map

A Keyword Map for Every Trek You Sell

A keyword map gives each search one page and each page one job. This is a sample for one trek. Every trek you sell gets its own, so no two pages compete for the same search.

03Page structure

Itinerary Page Structure and Topical Clusters

The trek page sells. The pages around it answer what travellers ask first: permits, best season, difficulty and cost. Each links back to the trek page with the trek name, so Google knows which page should rank.

The Trek Page

Trek name and length in the title, trip facts first, then day by day, altitude, includes and excludes, departures and an FAQ.

Permit Pages

Which permits a region needs and who applies, with the date you last checked and the official source.

Best Season Pages

Month by month for that trek: weather, crowds, pass conditions and your departures.

Difficulty Pages

Walking hours, sleeping altitudes, rest days and the fitness it really takes, written with your guides’ input.

Cost Pages

What a traveller pays for permits, guide, lodges, meals and flights, and which of those your price covers.

04Permit facts

Permit Facts That Change, Dated and Sourced

Nepal’s permit rules have changed several times since 2023. A permit page that names the rule, the date and the source is the one travellers trust, bloggers link to and AI tools can quote.

1 April 2023Nepal Tourism Board

Licensed Guide and TIMS Card in 14 Regions

Foreign trekkers in 14 regions, from Kanchenjunga to Humla, had to trek with a guide arranged by a registered company and carry a TIMS card.

March 2023Khumbu Pasang Lhamu

The rural municipality covering the Everest region let solo trekkers walk without a guide that spring, using its own trek card. Check which rule applies before each season.

22 March 2026Department of Immigration

Solo Trekkers Can Get Restricted Area Permits

Restricted areas in 13 districts, including Upper Mustang, Dolpa and Manaslu, opened to individual trekkers, who still need a registered agency and a licensed guide.

28 October 2026Department of Immigration

Permits Paused for a Snowstorm Warning

Restricted-area permits for the high hills and Himalaya were suspended from 29 to 31 October 2026 over snow and avalanche forecasts. A dated notice answers that before anyone emails.

Link each permit page to an official source, such as the Nepal Tourism Board’s permit page, and re-check it every season.

05International SEO

International SEO with Hreflang for Each Market

Nepal received 1,158,459 international visitors in 2025. After India, the United States sent the most, and the United Kingdom was fourth. In October 2025, the US, the UK and Germany ranked second, third and fifth.

  • One English version usually serves the US, the UK and Australia
  • German or French pages only where you can answer enquiries in that language, translated by a person
  • Every version lists itself and the others in hreflang, plus an x-default; Google ignores tags that don’t point back
  • Hreflang shows the right version; it doesn’t make a weak page rank

Rules from Google’s guide to localized versions of your pages.

06Local and reviews

Google Business Profile in Thamel and Reviews That Count

Travellers check your Google profile and TripAdvisor page before they pay a deposit. Both only help when they follow each platform’s rules.

Google Business Profile in Thamel

  • At your real, staffed office: Google says a mailing address you don’t work from isn’t eligible
  • Your real-world name only, with no “Best Trekking Agency” added, which can get a profile suspended
  • Few, specific categories, such as tour operator or travel agency
  • Photos from real treks, a post each season and links to trek pages

Reviews on TripAdvisor and Google

  • Ask every traveller after the trek; Google forbids asking only happy customers
  • No discounts or gifts for reviews: Google bans incentives, and Tripadvisor treats rewarded reviews as biased
  • No reviews from guides or staff, which Google treats as a conflict of interest
  • A reply to every review, and short quotes on trek pages linked to the source

Rules from Google’s Business Profile guidelines and its policy on fake engagement. For the two trekking hubs, see my notes on SEO in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

08AI answers

AI Search Answers for Trek Questions

Google says there is nothing extra to do to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: no special schema, no AI text files. The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, then be the clearest answer.

FAQ rich results stopped showing on 7 May 2026, but a question heading with a short, direct answer below it is still the easiest passage to quote. I also keep your facts identical on your site, Google profile, TripAdvisor and OTA listings.

  • How hard is the Manaslu Circuit?

The difficulty page, first paragraph, with altitudes and daily hours.

  • Do I need a guide for Annapurna?

The permit page, with the rule, its date and the source.

FAQ: SEO for Trekking Companies

Cost, timelines, OTAs, languages, schema, links and reviews.

Ask me on WhatsApp

How Much Does SEO Cost for a Trekking Company in Nepal?

With me, an SEO audit of a trekking website starts from NPR 15,000 and takes about a week. Monthly SEO starts from NPR 30,000 and covers keyword maps per trek, cluster pages, your Google profile, reviews and links. Trek page writing is quoted separately, and paid tools and ads are extra.

How Long Does It Take to Rank for a Trek Name?

Expect 3 to 6 months to see movement on most trek pages, and longer for head terms like “Everest Base Camp trek”, which every agency, OTA and travel blog targets. Less crowded routes and specific questions, such as restricted-area permits, usually move first.

Can My Website Outrank TourRadar or Viator?

For specific searches, it can. An OTA page describes many agencies’ trips in one format, while yours can carry first-hand detail: your guides’ notes, dated permit rules and a full cost breakdown for one trek. Keep your OTA listings for reach while direct bookings grow.

Do I Need a Separate Page for Every Trek?

Yes, one page for each trek you run, because each trek is its own search. Versions of the same trek, such as 12 and 14 days, usually belong on one page with options, so two pages don’t compete. Permit, season and cost pages then link back to it.

How Do I Rank in Germany or Other Non-English Markets?

Publish real pages in that language on their own URLs, translated by a person, and link every version to the others with hreflang tags. Research searches in that language, because travellers may phrase a trek differently. Only add a language you can answer enquiries in.

Do FAQ and Schema Still Help Trek Pages in 2026?

FAQ rich results stopped showing in Google on 7 May 2026, though clear questions and short answers still help travellers and AI answers. Breadcrumbs still show on desktop. Google has no rich result for TouristTrip, and its event guidelines say not to mark up trip packages as events.

Is It Safe to Give a Blogger a Free Trek for a Link?

Hosting a writer is fine, but their link should carry rel=“sponsored” or nofollow. Google’s spam policies count a product given in exchange for a write-up with a link as link spam, and a free trek is the same trade. Earn followed links with pages people want to cite.

How Can a Trekking Company Get More Reviews?

Ask every traveller at the end of the trek, not only the happy ones, with short links to your Google profile and TripAdvisor page sent on WhatsApp the same day. Never offer discounts or gifts for reviews, never let guides or staff review the company, and reply to every review.
