Few cities in Nepal have an economy as tied to one place as Birgunj’s is to its border crossing. Almost every business here sells to someone who is not in the room, so the website does the first round of selling.

Healthcare is the other draw: Birgunj has several eye hospitals that treat many patients from India. Most people in Parsa speak Bhojpuri at home, alongside Nepali, Maithili and Hindi.

Search behaviour
An importer in Kathmandu searches in English for a clearing agent in Birgunj and judges you by how clearly your site explains the process. A patient in Raxaul or Motihari looks up an eye hospital in Birgunj on a phone, often in Hindi or English. A shopkeeper in Kalaiya orders from whoever answers fastest on WhatsApp.
